Are Fruit Salad Sweets Vegan?

Both the chews and the gums we stock are vegan and halal, with no gelatine in either. The gums do contain wheat.

Yes — both the fruit salad sweets we stock are vegan, and both are
halal.
Neither contains gelatine, which is the ingredient that usually decides it.

The two kinds, and how they differ

People mean two different sweets by “fruit salad”, and we sell both.

  • Fruit salad chews — the
wrapped chew, usually sold alongside blackjacks. 4.8g a sweet, about 18 calories and 2.3g
    of sugar
    each.
  • Fruit salad gums —
the softer gum. 4.6g a sweet, about 15 calories and 1.8g of sugar each.

Why they are vegan when most gummies are not

The gums are set with modified wheat starch rather than gelatine, and the
chews take their texture from glucose syrup and vegetable oil. Nothing in either declaration comes
from an animal — no gelatine, no beeswax, no shellac, no dairy.

The colour is from plants as well: curcumin, copper complex of chlorophyll, capsorbin and black
carrot juice.

One thing to check if you avoid gluten

The gums list modified wheat starch and carry cereals containing
gluten
as a declared allergen. Vegan and gluten free are different questions, and this is a
clean example of a sweet passing one and failing the other. If gluten is your issue, start from
which sweets are gluten free.

Are they vegetarian?

Yes. Anything vegan is vegetarian by definition, because vegan is the stricter of the two
tests. The confusion usually runs the other way: plenty of vegetarian sweets are not vegan,
normally because of beeswax, shellac or milk. We set that out in
is gelatine vegan.
