No, and the two get confused constantly. Halal asks where an ingredient came from; vegetarian asks whether there is any animal in it at all.
This comes up more than almost anything else, and the short answer is no —
halal and vegan are not the same thing, and a halal sweet is very often not vegetarian
either. They are two different tests asking two different questions.
Halal asks where an ingredient came from and how it was produced. In
confectionery that almost always comes down to gelatine: was it pork, was it beef, and if beef,
was the animal slaughtered according to halal requirements.
Vegetarian asks something simpler and stricter: is there any animal in this at
all. Vegan goes further again, ruling out anything an animal produced —
honey, beeswax, shellac, milk.
So a sweet set with halal beef gelatine passes the first test and fails the other two. The
gelatine is still gelatine. Being halal does not make it less of an animal product.
Our Vimto jelly babies declare
beef gelatine (halal). That makes them halal. It does not make them vegetarian,
and it certainly does not make them vegan.
Our wine gums are the same, with a second catch: they
carry beeswax as a glazing agent. Even a gelatine-free sweet with beeswax on it
is not vegan.
Usually, but not automatically. A vegan sweet contains no animal product, so the gelatine
question never arises. That covers the great majority of cases.
Two things can still catch you out. Alcohol is not an animal product, so a
vegan sweet can still carry an alcohol-based flavouring or a liqueur centre.
And certification is a separate matter again: a vegan sweet has not been through
any halal audit just by being vegan.
Every sweet we sell is halal. That is a statement about what we choose to stock rather than a
certification — we hold no shop-wide certificate, and where an individual line is certified
it is the manufacturer who holds it.
Our vegan range is a separate and smaller set, because
vegan is the stricter test. If you need both, start there rather than with the halal range.
Every product page publishes the supplier’s full declaration, which is what lets you apply
whichever test is yours. More in is gelatine
halal and is gelatine vegan.
