Sweets that work for this
Build each bag from three things
The bags that look generous are not the heaviest ones, they are the ones with variety. Three groups, and you can do the whole lot from one pick and mix order:
- Something with bulk — foam shapes, large jellies, marshmallows. These fill the bag fast and stop it looking mean. About half the weight.
- Something with colour — gummies and jellies. This is what a child sees through the bag. About a third.
- Something small and sharp — fizzy or sour pieces, small wrapped sweets. These fall into the gaps so the bag does not look half empty by the time it reaches the door.
Wrapped beats unwrapped at a doorstep. It is what most parents will accept, it survives being carried round a street in the rain, and anything left over keeps until Christmas.
What not to put in
Four things, and the first one is not a matter of taste:
- Small hard sweets and lollipops, for very young callers. Round, firm and airway-sized is a genuine choking risk under four rather than a general caution. Soft and small is the safer choice at a door where you cannot see how old everyone is — the detail is in are lollipops safe for children?
- Unwrapped fizzy and sour sweets, if you are making bags ahead. The acid coating draws in moisture and the pieces weld together within a day.
- Chocolate, if the house is warm. It blooms and marks the bag. That is appearance rather than safety, but it looks like something has gone wrong.
- Anything dusted. The dusting migrates and the inside of the bag goes cloudy.

How many sweets go in a trick-or-treat bag?

How many trick-or-treaters should I expect?
A quiet street is 20 to 30 callers, an average one 40 to 60, and a busy one anywhere from 80 to 150. If you have not done it before, ask a neighbour rather than guessing - it varies enormously street to street.
Should I hand out loose sweets or make up bags?
Loose is cheaper and faster: three to four pieces per caller, so a kilo covers 60 to 80. Bags look more generous and are easier to hand over quickly, but cost more per caller and take an evening to make.
How far ahead can I make them?
Two to three weeks with wrapped or dry unwrapped sweets, sealed and kept cool. Only a day if you are using unwrapped fizzy or sour sweets, because the acid coating pulls in moisture and they go tacky.
