Sugar-free mints with xylitol genuinely help. Sugared mints do the opposite. The difference is bigger than most people think.
Mints are the one sweet people eat believing it is doing them good. That is true of some and the opposite of others, and the gap between the two is wider than most people realise.
Not sugar directly. Bacteria in dental plaque ferment sugar and produce acid, and it is the acid that dissolves enamel. That distinction matters, because it means how often you eat sugar matters more than how much. One sugared mint every twenty minutes across an afternoon keeps the mouth acidic almost continuously and is considerably worse than eating the whole packet at once.
A sugared mint sucked slowly is close to a worst case: sugar, held against the teeth, for a long time.
Sugar-free mints are sweetened with sugar alcohols — usually isomalt, maltitol, sorbitol or xylitol. Oral bacteria cannot ferment them into acid, so there is no acid attack.
Xylitol goes further than the others. Bacteria take it up but cannot metabolise it, which reduces their ability to grow, and there is reasonable evidence that regular xylitol use lowers decay rates. Sucking any sugar-free mint also stimulates saliva flow, and saliva neutralises acid and helps remineralise enamel — which is why dentists suggest sugar-free gum or mints after a meal rather than brushing straight away.
They are not fully absorbed in the small intestine, so in quantity they draw water into the bowel and have a laxative effect. UK labelling requires a warning where polyols exceed 10% of the product, and those warnings are there for a reason — a whole bag of sugar-free mints in one sitting will be noticed. Sorbitol is the most likely to cause it; isomalt and xylitol are gentler.
Xylitol is toxic to dogs, and seriously so — it causes a rapid insulin release and can lead to liver failure. Keep sugar-free mints away from pets and treat a dog eating them as an emergency.
Separate problem, and sugar-free does not help with it. Erosion is enamel dissolving in acid regardless of bacteria, so anything sharply acidic — including sugar-free sour sweets — still erodes. Mints are not usually acidic, which is one more reason they are a comparatively safe choice.

The thing most people get wrong about sugar and teeth is that they think about
how much. What actually matters is how long your mouth stays acidic.
Every time you eat something sugary, oral bacteria ferment it and produce acid. The pH in your
mouth drops, enamel begins to demineralise, and it takes roughly twenty to forty minutes
for saliva to bring things back to normal. Eat a whole bag of sweets in one sitting and
you get one acid episode. Have one mint an hour through a working day and you get eight.
By that measure a slowly sucked sugared mint is close to the worst thing you can do to your
teeth — not because it contains much sugar, but because it holds your mouth acidic for the
entire time it is dissolving.
Sugar-free mints are not simply neutral. Xylitol cannot be fermented by
Streptococcus mutans, the bacterium most associated with decay. The bacteria take
it up, fail to metabolise it, and are worse off for the effort. That is a genuinely different
mechanism from “contains no sugar”.
Sugar-free mints and gum also stimulate saliva, which is the body’s own buffer — it
raises pH and carries calcium and phosphate back to the enamel surface. This is why chewing
sugar-free gum after a meal has real evidence behind it, and it is one of the few places where a
confectionery product does something useful.

Sugar is not the only thing that erodes enamel. Acid does it directly, with no
bacteria involved at all. That makes strongly sour sweets a separate risk from sugary ones, and it
is why the enamel damage from sour sweets shows up differently — smooth, glossy wear rather

One counterintuitive point worth knowing: do not brush immediately after anything
acidic. Enamel is temporarily softened, and brushing then scrubs it away. Wait an hour,
or rinse with water and brush later.
Xylitol is severely toxic to dogs at doses far below anything that affects a
human. Sugar-free mints in a coat pocket or a handbag left at dog height is a genuinely common way
this happens.
